Reni Küng was born in 1967 in Näfels. A small village in Switzerland, in the valley of the Glarner Alps. Born into a fourth generation of Printers, she followed tradition and learned Typography in her parents business. Soon after graduating, she fulfilled her own dream and studied Graphic Design at the ‘Kunstgewerbe Schule’ in Zürich. Over the next few years Reni worked in advertising, but struggled with the wider reality of it. Disillusioned, she took time out and travelled abroad.
The freedom of travel was stimulating and Reni realised that in order to create an original style, she had to be wholly herself...
Then, when an opportunity arrived, she returned to Europe and settled in London. Working, but with little spare money, she took to long walks through the streets. She observed everything around her and was intrigued by individual expressions of street art;
raw, uncensored, fresh and true, and so very different to what she knew.
One easter weekend, Reni found herself alone with a bag of I000 headless matchsticks. Bewitched, She started to glue and quickly found a rhythm, guided by “I wonder what will happen if…" That weekend she created her first work of art. It was time to return home… and home by then had become Sydney. She had a plan.
An inheritance allowed her to rent a small cottage for a year and she set to work. After a year she was given the opportunity to exhibit next to an established artist at ’Michael Commerford Gallery‘. The show was a personal success and opened doors for her first large commissions. Reni is still with ‘MCG’ and is now one of the three artists permanently on show.
